Setting up Adobe Flash CS5 for Android Development

This page has now been updated to reflect the removal of the Andriod Flash Extension from Adobe’s website. We have provided the extension for download here.

Adobe Flash CS5, as you may have noticed, comes with an iPhone packager already included. This is an awesome tool if you are planning to use Flash for iPhone development, as I once was.

The packager will allow you to put all the relevant information (App name, icons etc) into the packager when publishing, and a nice little ipa file will be made for you to send off to Apple. Genius.

But what about Android? How do I convert my Flash app to an apk, the Android application format? I will tell you how. In the exact same way as with the iPhone. When you create a new document in Flash CS5, you will see that you can choose to create an iPhone application from a template, so we need exactly the same for Android, and Adobe have made this easy for us.

  • The first thing you will need is Abode Flash CS5. Download a trial of this software from here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/. (I do not condone software piracy, buy Flash CS5)
  • You will now need to download the Android extension that Adobe have released for Adobe Air. You can get that here.  Once you have downloaded the file, double click to install it. When installing the extension, your computer will automatically use Adobe Extension Manager to handle it. This is a piece of software that you will have as a result of downloading the Flash CS5 trial. There may be occasions, when installing the extension, where you are notified that you do not have the correct permissions to install it. It then asks you to contact an Administrator and will not complete the install. To get around this, simply search for ‘Extension Manager’ in your start bar to find this application, right click on it and select ‘Run as Administrator’. Then open the extension file that you downloaded from within the Extension Manager software.
  • When you open Flash CS5 now, you will find that you have the option to create Android specific applications! Result!
  • Make some cool apps and get them on the market!

Enjoy!

  1. hi Chris,

you wouldn’t happen to have the Flash CS5 Extension for Android still lying about on your desktop would you? The reason I ask is that they’ve taken it down from the Labs website now as there incorporating into the new Flash CS5.5, and I really need it! I’m developing an app for my dissertation and stupidly started it in Flash when I didn’t have the extension.. Any help would be great!

    • Hi Henry,

      Thanks for getting in touch.

I think I do still have this on my laptop. I will check tonight and forward it on to you if it’s there. I wasn’t aware that they had removed this, or that they were planning to incorporate it into the new release. Exciting stuff! Do you have an email address that I can forward the extension on to?

Also, you sound very busy but if you feel like guest writing a blog post for this site about the new release, please feel free to email me on wakey7dev@gmail.com

      Thanks

      Chris
